Fresh ethnic violence has broken out in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, with scores of people feared dead after armed militias reportedly launched coordinated attacks on several communities.

Local sources said the assailants stormed villages in a series of assaults, killing residents and forcing terrified locals to hurriedly bury victims as fear and chaos spread across the area.

The renewed violence is believed to be linked to lingering tensions between the Bachama and Tchobo-speaking communities, whose rivalry has triggered several deadly clashes in recent months.

The crisis had previously drawn national outrage when troops of the Nigerian Army deployed to restore calm allegedly opened fire on unarmed women protesting earlier violence in the area.

In response to the latest attacks, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has imposed a 24-hour curfew across the entire Lamurde Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, the governor said the decision followed renewed attacks and a breakdown of law and order in parts of the council area.

“Government views these disturbances as unacceptable and has directed security agencies to enforce the curfew strictly,” the statement said.

Fintiri warned that anyone found violating the directive would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The curfew takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice, as security agencies have been tasked with restoring normalcy and preventing further bloodshed.

Residents have been urged to comply fully with the directive and cooperate with security operatives by providing information that could help bring the crisis under control.

The governor reiterated that his administration will not tolerate violence under any guise and remains committed to protecting lives and property across Adamawa State.
